Footwear and insoles are “dual-purpose” items under IRS rules. They can be an eligible medical expense when they are used to treat or relieve a diagnosed condition, which is why eligibility dependson you and your plan, not on the shoe. Kansas City customers most often use HSA/FSA funds here for supportive footwear with a structured heel counter and anatomical arch support; over-the-counter arch supports and insoles; custom orthotics, diabetic footwear and inserts with a prescription.

Many plans pay for dual-purpose items only with a prescription or Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) that names the condition and the recommended item. An LMN must come from your treating provider (physician, podiatrist or nurse practitioner). Our pedorthists cannot write one, but we will give you an itemized receipt and a description of the supportive features of what you bought to send with it.
